I want you to find Vilvam tree on this day, commune by touching them and pluck the tender leaves and if possible also ripe vilvam fruits to offer Lord Shiva. Be in fasting from morning, stay awake through out the night, do meditation and rituals. Lord Shiva will visit earth plane on this day and fix your inner self for a successful life. You may break fast the next morning.

And emotions are influenced by the Moon phases. Since Shivarathiri is a no moon day, there will be minimal or no emotions and thoughts in you. If you are at Shiva temple recite Na Ma Si Va Ya for 18 X with your eyes clossed. Then slowly open your eyes and look at the Shiva Linggam. If you are in tune with him then you will be lucky to see him giving darshan from the Linggam.
